Cassandra Swanson

President, The African Atlantic Genealogical Society
Cassandra Swanson is a visionary leader, compassionate educator, and dedicated community servant whose life and career are rooted in the principles of faith, legacy, and service. As the President of The African Atlantic Genealogical Society, Cassandra champions the rediscovery and preservation of African American and African Diaspora family histories. She believes in the power of genealogy as a tool for healing, intergenerational connection, and cultural empowerment, especially among Black elders and youth.
Born in Massapequa, New York, and educated in Amityville, Cassandra’s journey of service began early through her church community, leadership in the Girl Scouts, and her work as a foster parent and youth advocate. These formative experiences shaped her deep commitment to uplifting others and creating lasting systems of care.
Her professional path began in early childhood education, teaching pre-kindergarten and leading after-school programs where she mentored and inspired young learners. Cassandra pursued her studies at Benedict College in South Carolina and SUNY Old Westbury, cultivating a strong foundation in education and community leadership.
In the early 2000s, she transitioned into church administration, taking on roles that allowed her to further her mission of intergenerational care and spiritual leadership. As a Church Administrative Assistant and Senior Citizen Ministry Coordinator, Cassandra works tirelessly to ensure seniors are heard, valued, and connected. Through wellness initiatives, outreach programs, and faith-based genealogical workshops, she fosters spaces where stories are shared, identities are reclaimed, and family histories are honored.
Under her leadership at the African Atlantic Genealogy Society, Cassandra has developed programs that empower Black elders and families to trace their roots, preserve cultural memory, and pass down the knowledge of their ancestors. Her unique ability to blend historical research with compassionate ministry has made her a trusted guide in the journey of personal and collective discovery.
Cassandra’s values—faithful, determined, creative, thoughtful, personal, and compassionate—are reflected in every aspect of her work. Whether mentoring a young student, supporting a senior in discovering their family tree, or advocating for foster children, Cassandra leads with heart and purpose.
A lifelong learner and advocate, her legacy is one of connection: connecting people to each other, to their history, and to a future grounded in truth and pride.
