About TAAGS
The African Atlantic Genealogical Society, Inc.
The African Atlantic Genealogical Society, Inc. (TAAGS) is dedicated to guiding individuals and
families on the journey of tracing their lineage and reclaiming their personal and collective
histories. Genealogy, for us, is not just about names and dates — it’s a treasure hunt, a
collection of stories, and a puzzle that, when completed, reveals the beauty and resilience of
our ancestry. It is a way of understanding who we are by uncovering who we come from.
TAAGS became the first genealogical society housed in a museum setting, creating a unique
space where research, cultural preservation, and community education meet. TAAGS
empowers individuals—especially within the African American community—to reconstruct their
family trees through research, storytelling, and historical documentation. Our work is especially
vital for African Americans whose ancestral records were fractured by slavery, segregation, and
systemic erasure. Through workshops, consultations, and community programming, we help
restore those connections and affirm that, despite centuries of displacement and trauma, we
are survivors and builders of legacy.
TAAGS proudly managed the Joysetta & Julius Pearse African American Museum, named in
honor of two pioneering leaders in genealogical and cultural preservation. Museum
management under TAAGS has been rooted in innovation, inclusion, and community
engagement. We have curated exhibits and programs that uplift African American history,
culture, and art—creating space for intergenerational learning and healing. We believe Black
History is American History.
At TAAGS, we believe you are the expression of the present, the result of the past, and the
foundation of the future. Genealogy is your gateway to that truth—and we are here to guide
you there.
